Fordyce spots : Fordyce spots are sebaceous glands that are present in most individuals. They a are seen on the genitals and/or in the mouth as small, painless, raised, pale, red or white spots or bumps 1 to 3 mm in diameter that may appear on the scrotum, shaft of the penis or on the labia, and on the inner surfaceand vermilion border of the lips of the face. Herpes is very different with shallow ulcers.

normal vs virus: Fordyce "granules" are a normal observation and will never go away. They are actually an enlarged or prominent oil gland, are nonpainful and usually a flat or slightly bumpy yellowish colored observation. They come in multiples over a large area, most often on the inner cheek or mucosa behind the lips. Herpes on the otherhand are larger sores that weep fluid, can be painful and come and go.
