A member asked:

Could a fissure become infected and cause a rectovaginal fistula or could it be deep enough to cause one?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No: These conditions would be unrelated. An anal fissure is superficial and externally located on the skin. A recto-vaginal fistula is a deeper abnormality between these two structures, usually related to past trauma or injury (e.G , childbirth). Fissures often heal without surgery. Fistulas often need surgical repair.
