Most dont need surg.: Unless the mitral valve prolapse is associated with severe valve leakage, there would be no surgery needed. Mv prolapse is caused by excess tissue in the valve which bends backward slightly into the left atrium when the valve is closed. Should ensure good hydration if have mvp. Nothing in particular worsens mvp except perhaps high blood pressure- which should be controlled for many other reasons.

Repair: Mitral valve prolapse is a structural problem caused by weakness in the valve tissue. The valve is a moving structure under significant pressure stress with every heart beat. There is no medical therapy which will fix it. Valve repair is recommended if it becomes symptomatic. Valve replacement is a last option.
