Comprehensive exam: The place to start is with a comprehensive dental exam by a dentist or prosthodontist.Your teeth, bite, TMJ and habits will be examined to find out why you are grinding once the why is known a treatment can be established. This can be a complex problem to treat.

Malocclusion : And possible stress. Consult with an orthodontist as soon as possible to see if adequate ortho correction can be achieved primarily. Restorative therapy can be accomplished once the bite is normalized. Hope this helps.

The cause of: Bruxism is not well understood. Stress, sleep disorders, malocclusions, and bite interferences are some theories. Different dentists have very different theories on how best to treat this problem. Many dentists have little true knowledge in this area and simply make a ng. I would start by finding a local dentist who has extensive training and experience in this area and take it from there.

Many bad effects: Bruxism, or grinding of the teeth at night can be devastating to the teeth, muscles, the jaw joints and your overall health. It can wear down the teeth, affecting a domino effect of gum disease, loose teeth, shifting and moving of the teeth, headaches, on and on. It is not something that should be ignored or put off. See a dentist asap to avoid problems later.

Many reasons: Stress, bad bite-malocclusion, even lifting up heavy items or weights during exercise at the gym, etc. All contribute to bruxism issues, and you end up with attrition, sometimes bony exostoses, worsening of your bite, muscles of mastication, airway issues become involved at times, and even headaches/migraines. Talk to your dentist on options... There are many!
