You nailed it...: Given that your inner ears communicate with the back of your nose, whenever there is swelling in that area, e.g., allergies, cold, sinus infection, it often makes it harder for your ears to drain or to keep pressure out of there. So, most likely, the muffled sound is related. Try a decongestant and/or anti-histamine for a couple of days and see if it improves.
