Not sure...: Humming or ringing in one's ears should be evaluated by your md. Both air and bone conduction tests will distinguish between sensory, neural, and conductive hearing loss. Although the "hollow" sound you describe sounds like a normal tapping sound, if you're concerned an evaluation would be appropriate.
