Chance is high: Thyroid disease typically runs along the female side of the family. Your mother most likely had autoimmune thyroid disease (hashimoto's) causing her low thyroid. I personally have never seen anyone die of complications from hypothyroidism. As long as you are monitored for it, you should do fine with treatment.
