In many cases it is caused by blood clots that travel to your lungs from your legs. This can cause serious illness and even death. Multiple: A pulmonary embolism causes interruption of blood flow to a section of the lung. Since it interferes with oxygen exchange, shortness of breath is a main symptom. Chest pain can also occur, as well as coughing up blood. You have a history of emboli, and should be followed closely.
