Unfortunately, : Unfortunately, none of the symptoms of a pulmonary embolism (pe) are specific to it, and many other conditions can mimic its presentation. The most common symptoms are shortness of breath, chest pain, and rarely dizziness/collapse or coughing up blood. Some patients may have no symptoms at all and what makes the diagnosis even more difficult sometime is that most patients with a pe will have very few subtle if not any abnormalities on physical exam. A pe is also in most cases unable to be seen on a standard chest x-ray, and therefore specialized tests such as a ct chest or a nuclear medicine scan called a v/q scan need to be obtained to make a diagnosis.
