See below: If this is an only episode of pe and you don't have recurring risk factors such as a clotting disorder, malignancy, autoimmune disease, birth-control pills, smoking etc, you usually wouldn't need to take Coumadin (warfarin) for more than 6 months. Share all of the above with your new doctor!

He may be right: The current recommendations for treatment of pulmonary emboli is to treat for 6 months with anticoagulation, but there are certain circumstances that would support using anticoagulation for a longer period of time. You need to discuss that with your doctor...
