Depends: Atypical cells, usually referring to lymphocytes (white blood cells), can be reported on a complete blood count (CBC) test. These can be due to a recent viral infection, or these could be leukemia cells. The clinical picture and the results of the rest of the CBC will help determine if more specialized tests are required to figure out what these atypical cells truly represent.
