Amyloid plaques: Amyloid plaques are deposits of a type of protein (amyloid) in the brain. It occurs to a small extent with normal aging and to a much greater extent with certain disorders such as alzheimer's disease. Amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles (another type of deposit associated with a protein called tau) are the hallmarks of alzheimer's disease.
