A member asked:

What happens to nail when it goes black? will it grow from underneath?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Rule out melanoma: Whenever a nail turns black, the question is whether it is truly black or dried blood which appears black. Usually a history of trauma with sudden turning of the nail color will confirm that it is indeed dried blood under the nail. Any black nail that does not resolve and cannot be explained should be evaluated and followed by a dermatologist.
