Unfortunately: it sounds like the nail growth band (located at the base) was injured. You could consult a Dermatologist for an exact Diagnosis. The Treatment (if this is the diagnosis) is removal of the "dead" nail and possible cosmetic surgical evaluation. Hope this is helpful Dr Z

Podiatrist : Podiatrist or Board Certified Foot Surgeon can evaluate and treat old injured nail and nail bed; DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) can possibly debride and/or remove nail and potentially assist regrowth of new nail if nail matrix (where nail grows) has not been damaged.
