Bacteria: The reason for a root canal procedure is that the root canal is surgery on the inside of a tooth. If a physician operated on your belly you would expect him to put you on antibiotics. The root canal surgery is done to remove a diseased pulp from the tooth, that diseased pulp is usually infected, hence the pen v k which is sensitive to the type of germs in root canal infections.

Dentist judgement: Studies do not show a definite benefit to taking antibiotics for routine root canal therapy. The treatment itself should resolve the source of the infection. There are instances, however, where a dentist may elect to prescribe an antibiotic. Examples are compromised immune system, inability to adequately clean the tooth, presence of severe pain/swelling come to mind.

Pen VK: Usually patients do not know they need root canal until there is infection, when infection is present performing root canal and adequately cleaning and shaping the canals may not be enough to get rid of the infection, especially if it has migrated into the surrounding tissue and bone around the tooth root, this is the area that the antibiotic is prescribed for, the areas the root canal doesnt tx.
