Sleep patterns vary: Many babies have trouble sleeping all night if they are rocked to sleep. Try letting the baby fall asleep in his own bed. If he cries, wait a bit. Wait at least 5 minutes to see if he will quiet himself before going in to resettle him. Long stretches of sleep in the daytime could be a problem. Try waking him every 30 minutes. That may disrupt sleep patterns, so he may sleep better at night.
