Many: An internist (adult medicine specialist) or a family medicine doctor can evaluate this. A subspecialist in diabetes and other endocrine diseases is an endocrinologist who can also easily provide an opinion and recommendation.

Your regular doctor: Your gp, fp, internist ornp should be able to diagnose diabetes and prescribe appropriate treatment including use of metformin along with evaluating the other available meds for you. If you are looking for specialist then diabetologist or endocrinologist may help. Thanks.
