No: A 'ppi', proton-pump inhibitor, is a medication like Prilosec or Prevacid (both over-the-counter now). Ranitidine is zantac, (ranitidine) which is a histamine antagonist. They work differently to help reduce or block acid production in the stomach.

Histamine antagonist: No, ranitidine is a histamine antagonist -- it works by selectively blocking the histamine H2 receptor to lower stomach acid content. Similar end-effect as a PPI like omeprazole, but following a different mechanism.
