Yes: It's highly effective, though not as potent as a ppi. That said, it works well for many people. I think it's entirely reasonable to try it.

You can try: You can try zantac (ranitidine) or pepcid- it should help you. There are many types of ppi- if you can't tolerate one- discuss with your gp and your gp may put you on other ppi and see if you can tolerate that one better. Avoid food that triggers the problems, space 4 hours between dinner and bedtime. No alcohol, coffee, smoking as well.

Esophagitis: Zantac (ranitidine) can be effective in this situation. But, it is not as effective as the ppis. What always amazes me with this problem is that I have yet to have a patient ask on how to prevent the problem in the first place. What foods and drink and weight cause gerd and thus esophagitis. This is the more important part of healing: stopping the problem.
