Dry socket: Even though stitches have been secured, the extraction site may not be entirely closed. Negative pressure(smoking, sucking through a straw, sucking saliva away from the surgery site) can dislodge the clot.

YES : A dry socket has nothing to do with whether or not the dentist used sutures [stiches], and happens often with wisdom tooth extractions.
