Throat abscess: A true retropharyngeal abscess is a serious problem, and should be evaluated immediately. Usual symptoms include a severe sore throat, usually on one side, with swelling and fever. It's very unlikely to cause no symptoms. It may require an incision and drainage operation, as well as antibiotic treatment and usually hospitalization. See an ENT or go to an er if you think you have a throat abscess.

No: A retropharyngeal abscess is a serious infection that results in fever, pain, difficulty swallowing and breathing. A retro pharyngeal mass could however be less symptomatic; imaging studies such as ct or MRI in conjunction with a thorough physical exam should be performed.

No: You would likely have significant symptoms. Fever, malaise, sore and difficult swallowing. If a doc told you this was the diagnosis, you should be hospitalized and have a drainage procedure. The specialist involved with this abscess is an ENT doc.
