Throat abscess: A retropharyngeal abscess is an infection with a large pocket of pus in the back of your throat. It is usually painful and, if large enough, may obstruct your breathing. The only reliable procedure is surgical drainage by an ENT physician. In some cases just draining the pus with a needle may be enough. Antibiotics are also used in treatment, but are not effective enough when used alone.

Drainage: One way or another it must be drained. Open surgery or needle drainage with high dose antibiotics.
