A 38-year-old member asked:

is pus dangerous in wounds?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Michael Miller
Wound care 36 years experience
Not Neccasarily: Pus is basically when the fighting white blood cells surround a foreign invader in your system. It may be bacteria but it also can be a foreign body, or dead tissue. Inflammation (red, hot, swelling, pain) is actually a beneficial thing that help prevent and fight infection. Unless it is worsening and you have fevers, chills, and other concerns, close observation is not necessarily wrong.

Yes: Vitamin a is required for skin and bone formation, cellular and immune function. Vitamin c is necessary for collagen formation, proper immune function, and as a tissue antioxidant. Vitamin e is the major lipid-soluble antioxidant in the skin; however, the effect of vitamin E on surgical wounds is inconclusive.

A 39-year-old member asked:

Is there a particular part of the blood that helps wounds heal?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Scott Bolhack

Blood and Wounds: Blood is filled with goodies that help people heal. Platelets help a wound form a scab and provide that first barrier to prevent open exposure to the environment. Growth factors in the platelets help with the healing process also. Clotting factors in the blood help the blood clot also. Then white blood cells help with fighting infection. The red blood cells continue to supply oxygen to the tissues.

A 37-year-old member asked:

What might it mean for pus to be coming out of my bellybutton?

1 doctor answer4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Barry Rosen
General Surgery 34 years experience
Omphalitis!: Belly button infections are quite rare in adults, unless due to trauma from piercings. This usually responds to oral antibiotics. If it recurs, one should search for an umbilical cord remnant connecting the belly button to the intestine or bladder (this can be seen on cat scan). If present, surgical excision is necessary.
