It is infected: It is not normal to have pus or redness unless it is infected. I would have the wound evaluated by a physician who will most likely culture the wound and start him on the proper antibiotic.

Could be. : Sound like there may be an infection. See the surgeon to see if something is being missed or he/she requires a short course of antibiotics
