Commonly: Staph infection for an ingrown toenail is the most common infecting bacteria. Typically an infection from an ingrown toenail requires your foot doctor to cut the ingrown toenail out and allow for the infection to drain. You will need to soak your foot or use a special antibiotic ointment afterwards and possibly be on oral antibiotics to clear the infection. Don't wait too long to be seen!

Happens all the time: A ingrown nail is a wound violating your skin that will allow bacteria in. Your feet and especially around the nails are very dirty and try as you may you can not wash the are well enough to clean it up. You need to have the nail portion that penetrates the skin removed and treat with antibiotics topically and often orally a well.

Common infection: Staph is a common bacteria which resides on the outside skin surface; however, when an ingrown nail occurs, it will irritate the skin in the nail fold and make it vulnerable to be infiltrated. Once the bacteria has an entry point, it can begin to spread and cause an infection.
