Hypothyroidism: Tsh (thyroid stimulating hormone) is secreted into the blood stream to stimulate the thyroid to make more thyroid hormone. If your system decides it needs more thyroid hormone, the TSH will increase. If a person is hypothyroid, the thyroid cannot make sufficient thyroid hormone. So, when the body needs more thyroid hormone, the TSH level rises. This lets your doc know to increase the synthroid (thyroxine).
