Large Bumps Tongue: Large bumps on the tongue are the taste buds. Many people are very surprised by how large they are and how often they have not looked closely before.

Possibly normal: If they are on the back of his tongue and they do not hurt, then this is normal. We all have several very large taste buds (called vallate papilla) on the back of our tongues, but rarely realize they are there. Now that you are "looking" because of the strep throat you are noticing these taste buds. If they do hurt then have him reevaluated by his doctor.
