Do nerves really grow back? how would a nerve implant or transplant work?

Yes: Nerves that are reconnected grow together very slowly. In VCA transplants (vascularized composite allografts) i.e. Hand transplants. The nerves are spliced with micro-surgical techniques and they take months to heal. Real function only returns with therapy and time.
