See below: Penicillin acts by interfering with the bacterial cell wall synthesis during cell replication. In strep. Throat the penicillin only causes a slight decrease in the length of the usually self limited iiiness but prevents suppurative complications and immune sequella ie. Rheumatic fever and possibly glomerulnephritis. With other strep. Infections it takes longer than 2 days for improvement.
