Type of foot edema: Edema in feet & ankles is due to venous insufficiency when it is unilateral or uneven swelling if bilateral (more swelling in one foot > other), and is associated with increased pigmentation of the skin (from hemosiderin deposit) or with varicose (swollen) veins or bruises. Edema from CHF is symmetrical (bilateral)
