X rays and pregnancy: All pregnant females should avoid x ray exposure if possible. If you need to have a foot x ray, first inform the doctor of your pregnancy to assure that the x ray is absolutely needed. Be sure to wear a large protective x ray "apron". Foot x ray exposure is minimal, but the developing fetus is more sensitive to radiation than are adults.

Should be shielded: X ray during pregnancy should only be performed if there is an urgent/emergent reason. If it has to be done, your abdomen/pelvis should be shielded by a lead apron to block any xray exposure to that part of the body.

No.: It is a myth that any x-ray to any part of the body can affect the fetus. There is no internal or external radiation scatter to the pelvis during a foot x-ray, therefore no data-driven basis for pelvic shielding since the fetus experiences no radiation exposure. Shielding in this instance is only for psychological benefit.
