Genetics & lifestyle: Essential hypertension is caused by hardening or loss of elasticity of the arteries. It is genetic and runs in families, but lifestyle also plays an important role, as it is much more common with obesity, poor diet, smoking, alcohol or drug abuse or lack of exercise. Secondary HTN is caused by other illnesses, including kidney disease, thyroid disease, heart disease, diabetes, adrenal problem.

Not well known: The exact cause of hypertension is not well known and usually no apparent cause is found in most patients and that is why is it called essential hypertension. In general, high blood pressure is due to increase in vascular resistance/tone in most cases.
