Exercises: There are numerous exercise regimens that can help rehabilitate the tm joint, most notably the six by six exercises. You may want to see a physician who can do manipulations as well, either a chiropractor or do that can help re-align the joint or put you through some fast therapy. You can also get injections into the joint that can relieve pain. Also, try to reduce stress, large correlation w/tmj.

Meditation exercise: Good to use the bite guard each night. Check the internet about meditation types and learn one that suits you. Using meditation to relax jaw and muscles will help. Try to do anti stress activities.

Physical therapy : If financials are a concern, there are other ways to treat tmd, and since you already have a biteguard the next step would be some physical therapy. It involves muscle relaxation and improving the range of motion in the joint through exercises, ultrasound treatment and hot compresses. Another option is over the counter anti-inflammatory medication, as well as prescription muscle relaxants.

Medication, too: Use the bite guard nightly for now... Ask for a muscle relaxant to reduce the force of clenching/grinding... Put a little money aside and save up for the splint...

Splint is important!: Depending on the severity and cause of your TMJ disorder, there are a variety of approaches and treatments for your problem. Consult a few dentist who treat tmj. I'm sure you will find a doctor who is willing to help you get a custom splint for less than that! meanwhile, take Ibuprofen 200mg x 2 tabs, 3 x/day for inflammation for a couple of weeks.

Dilemma: Sorry to hear about your dilemma. You could maybe talk to the office as far as the splint and if they will work with you. It's tough, and you may have to try exercises, meds (hope not, ) or some alternative therapies.

Second opinion: TMJ splints vary in cost. Perhaps you can find a general practitioner that can help you less expensively.

TMJ treatment: Surgery is last resort only in severe cases and therefore I agree with you! Soft diet, hot wet compresses, NSAIDS if you can take them for a short time only! A properly fabricated appliance to help alleviate symptoms, even with a trained and knowledgeable dentist can\should cost less. It's a matter of finding one. MEDICAL insurance often covers splint therapy if Orthotic & not dental\orthodontic

Insurance policy ck: Read insurance policy carefully. Sometime they cover more than they'll tell you on the phone. Sometimes will cover treatment if by MD (MD, DDS oral surgeon). See TMJ expert, often can combine low cost splint with emd treatment like meds. PT, etc.
