See below: It is a useful aid to prevent intubation and ventilation in cases where the patient is very sedated. However, i would not use it as a bridge going the other way. I would allow the narcotics to clear before extubating your uncle.

Maybe: Ild is a complex disease, and the treatment is symptomatic and causal. If the chemotherapy is the cause than it gets better wit the d/c of chemotherapy. Prednisone might help and if his ild is part of a broader pulmonary fibrosis, with rather restrictive that obstructive disease, bipap might help. Usually appearance within this complex context of the co2 narcosis delays extubation to say the least.
