Radiation exposure in a barium swallow study is quite small especially in comparison to a ct scan. It's important to check for problems transferring food from mouth to pharynx, from pharynx to esophagus and then look for esophageal motility disorder or reflux as a cause of chronic cough, hoarseness or aspiration.
