Progression...: COPD is a slowly progressive lung disease and the progression will be slower if your mother no longer smokes. As the disease progresses, the lungs will gradually fail and her carbon dioxide will rise and her oxygen level will decrease. Eventually, her oxygen level will be low enough to require supplemental oxygen. She will become more short of breath, first with activity and later even @ rest.

Problems: Obstructive sleep apnea increases the risk of developing hypertension, heart disease including heart attacks and heart failure, stroke, and diabetes. COPD will accelerate all of these problems.
