No but advisable: No an implant is not necesary but today it is the best and mose effecient way to replace a missing tooth. At your age i think it is most advisable as it prevents furtere chaqnges in tooth position and the alternative is to have a bridge as a replacement. This requires the two adjcent teeth to be modified for the bridge.

Missing tooth: Your teeth are important for your dental and general health. They help you chew, swallow, speak, and smile. The loss of a back tooth may cause your mouth to shift and your face to look older and effect your digestion. The good news is missing teeth can be replaced. Depending on your needs the options are: implants, fix bridges and removable partials. Rec. See your dentist today.

Think of it this way, if you remove one stave from a barrel, the other staves collapse. Your occlusion is a finely tuned biomechanics system. Remove one part, the rest collapses. Google "Posterior Bite Collapse."

There is an important issue that also needs for consideration when considering an oral implant. A 15 year old must be fully physically mature to consider an oral implant, because, if this is not the case, the implant's vertical position will change, and therefore, the replaced tooth will also intrude, negatively affecting the patient's occlusion.
