Don't worry: You placed too much force on your wrist and sprained it (a ligament problem). High speed sprains can be painful and swollen, but overloading the joint can be more subtle. Give it rest and support (elastic wrap). Avoid Motrin type medications and it should heal on its own. An orthopedist or physiatrist can help if it doesn't resolve. Osteopathic manipulation can help too.

Time: First, check with a hand surgeon and have x'rays to make sure that there is not a more serious underlying injury. If it is a simple wrist sprain, then these can easily take 6-8 weeks for symptoms to improve.
