Crossing your legs puts pressure on the nerve at the knee and causes damage to the myelin (insulating material). This causes an electrical block. Recovery usually starts at about 3 weeks.Exercise and B12 will help.

Drop foot: The swimming you refer to can indeed help a drop foot condition as long as the peroneal nerve or nerve involved is not permanently damaged. A good neurologist or physiatrist can determine which nerves are involved. Exercise and strengthening the limb can prove helpful.
