A member asked:

Do cleft palate persons (repaired) have more teeth and gums problems as adults?

Cleft Palate: Aside from the deformity after the repair which can affect speech, teeth and gum problems are not increased with proper hygiene.

Depends on Cp/ defn: The CP defect ranges from unrecognized(submucous cleft smc) to one that extends forward to & thru the gumline with variable width.Atypical spacing and eruption patterns are more likely with the wider clefts while smc has no effect on dentition at all.The team staging the early repair will do so with thease issues in mind, but orthodontic work may be quite involved.Hygene may require greater effort.
