X-ray first... : With any finger injury you should have an x-ray to make sure that you don't miss a fracture, that may heal incorrectly. Once an x-ray is completed you will know if you need to individually splint the finger with something rigid, or if buddy taping is acceptable. Even with some fractures buddy taping is a good option, but this doesn't work for optimal healing of every finger injury.

Needs more time: First, its a good idea to have these injuries assessed by a hand surgeon to be sure there is not a more serious underlying injury. If this is a typical "volar plate" injury at the pip joint (middle knuckle of the finger), then pain can last many weeks but stiffness and swelling can last much longer. Focus on maintaining normal motion and the pain should fade with time provided you protect it.
