Yes: Likely he has another infection most likely bacterial (strep, etc) needs antibiotics

Infection: Viral infections, like influenza, can cause the bone marrow to temporarily decrease the production of red blood cells. The number of white blood cells would also be elevated as the body is trying fight off the infection. You can always ask your son's doctor to recheck his blood count after he is over the infection to make sure the counts have normalized.
