Cord blood: There could be several reasons for taking your cord blood. She may want to check for jaundice, infection or may have been for newborn metabolic screen done on all babies.

Cord blood studies: Obstetricians routinely gather placental blood samples to send for tests. The most common are the blood type and Coombs test but other tests also.A blood gas to quantitate the amount of fetal stress during labor & delivery is very time sensitive and must be drawn immediately to get valid results. These help baby and bypass having to draw the blood from babies small veins. Sad you were not informed.

Cutting...: ...Is mandatory to prevent blood outflow from the baby back to the placenta, and in some cases testing the cord blood as soon as possible is also mandatory. In general, between crowning and having the baby dried and wrapped in a blanket and handed to mother, lots of things must happen very quickly, and asking permission on the spot for every action is not only impractical but potentially dangerous.
