Do some women with breast implants have ongoing discomfort such as aches or pain after all has healed?

Not usually.: Some women will experience periodic discomfort or "talk back" from their breast implants, but the vast majority of women report that they are vey comfortable with their implants and rarely if ever notice them or think about them. If you are early after your surgery, it may take as long as a year to settle down. If you are experiencing noticeable discomfort, you should be evaluated by your surgeon.

Rarely: As with any surgical procedure there can be some pain that persists for weeks after the procedure. This is rare.

Yes: Chronic pain or discomfort after breast augmentation or reconstruction with implants may be possible, and it's possible with any surgery. But it is not usual.

Ongoing pain: If a patient continues to have pain months after implantation, a good examination must be done. This is not usual and maybe there is abnormal scar formation or impingement on a nerve. The latter is more common when too large implants are placed. Treatments for these problems are available and include everything from nerve blocks to surgery but someone should not suffer. Get a second opinion!

Breast implant pain: A small percentage of women do experience chronic pain following breast augmentation, even in the absence of a clear cause, such as scar tissue. For some patients, this is bearable, for others it is uncomfortable enough that implant removal may be the only option.
