Can your local gp see if you have throat cancer or not for diagnosis?

Yes: I am a hematologist/oncologist who particularly specializes in head and neck cancers and the answer to the above question is definitely yes. To offer an example, i was recently referred a pt who noticed persistent discomfort over the left side of his throat. He went to his gp who performed an oral exam and neck palpation and the pt appeared to have signs of locally advanced tonsillar cancer.

Usually: Symptoms related to throat cancer (hoarseness, dysphagia, difficulty swallowing, changes in speech) are possibly related to larynx cancer. A gp is able to use a mirror to see the function of the vocal cords and could see a mass. However, an ent/head and neck surgeon is going to be much better able to evaluate you for cancer of the larynx.

ENT specialist: Detailed examination of the throat is not an easy procedure. A gp may detect easily observable cancer, however, if it is concern at all, you should see a ear nose throat specialist.
