In medical not dental terms, what is tmj?

TMJ is the jaw joint: Tmj stands for temporomandibular joint. It's the joint that connects your lower jaw (mandible) to the skull at the temporal bone. It's a ball and socket joint with a disc that sits on top of the ball, and the whole thing slides and rotates when you open or close your mouth to chew. Many things can go wrong with this whole mechanism. The disc may become displaced, causing painful popping or locking.

Masseter imbalance: Jaw motion is directed, in great part, by the masseter muscle. Range of motion of the mandible and vector of movement of the mandible are functions of masseter symmetric function. Personss with a chronically tilted head have unilateral masseter muscle spasm and dominance and pain generstion from an overburdened tmj.

Anatomy: Tmj refers to the temporomandibular joints, where the upper bone (maxilla- temporal bone) and the lower jaw (mandible) meet and function...The joints. This is a simplistic description and you should look this up on the web for a more definitive anatomical answer. Better terms for symptoms associated with the TMJ mechanism are tmd (temporomandibular dysfunction, ) or TMJ syndrome.
