TMJ issues: The space maintainer (retainer), if that is what you are wearing, should not be causing your TMJ issues. It is basically a removable partial denture, and the fit and bite should be passive. Did your symptoms start after the surgery? Could be from having your mouth open wide for a while. Talk to your surgeon about this.

It is possible: Temporo-mandibular disorder is the second most frequent cause of orofacial pain after dental pain. Proper diagnosis is the key for the successful treatment. See an orofacial pain practitioner for a consultation and management.

Complicated question: See a TMJ expert in this complicated situation. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
