Stubborn inflammatio: Episcleritis, a usually unknown causation inflammation of the outer layers of the sclera, can slowly respond in some cases to treatment (rapidly in others). The eye will remain quite red even when it is responding. If your mom is comfortable with her ophthalmologist and the treatment, she should continue. If she is worried, then a second opinion from a uveitis specialist can be helpful.
