A 35-year-old member asked:
what does a lymph node swollen from cancer look like?
1 doctor answer • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Charles Sturgis answered
Pathology 29 years experience
Enlarged and firm.: A norml lymph node is about the size, shape and consistency of a partially cooked kidney bean (small, bean-shaped, and soft but solid). A lymph node involved by metastatic carcinoma would be enlarged, irregular in shape and would feel more firm / hard to the touch (like a pitted date). A node with carcinoma might also have a woody cut surface and might be 'fixed' to adjacent soft tissue.

Malignant: By definition, malignant tumors are cancerous. A tumor is just an abnormal swelling - many times it is benign (no serious, imminent concern). But if it is found to contain cancerous cells, it is then malignant.
