90%+ cases are NOT: Inherited. Only about 5% of ALS cases are family related, so you have relatively the same risk as anyone else. There are places that can test your having the genes for that type, but you probably have no cause to worry for your future. I imagine your family had a hard time while grandmother was ill. You all still might benefit from some therapeutic support around the issue. Best wishes!

Statistics: Do not worry or focus on this. Only 5-10% of all cases are genetic and the incidence is no higher than 0.4-3.0 per 100, 000 in all parts of the world. The 25% figure you cite relates to those familial cases involving the gene encoding copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (sod1). Your odds are very remote.
